Old-Polish meaning of langes messer

According to Old-Polish Encyclopedia by Zygmunt Gloger, messer sword came to Poland from the West. It gained much more respect than dagger, which was perceived as dastardly, disgraceful for a knight. Messer sword was seen as decent weapon, proper both for riding and walking knights. Author gives few 16th and 17th century maxims on a messer, and the most proper underlines the difference between this weapon and a sabre – first one is for fighting, while the second one is better as a decoration for clothing.

Together with slowly declining role of protective gear in the end of Middle Ages, among sword other forms of arms appeared – many kinds of long knives, falchions, and messers. These were used both by lower social classes and nobility.
